The peeling and processing line at at McCain’s potato specialities production plant at Wombourne, in the UK has been updated, and reinstalled in a more flexible and efficient layout.
Moving food production equipment requires a host of organisational skills; as well as planning, purchasing, fabrication, pipework, wiring, installation and commissioning expertise. It’s not an everyday operation at large food processing sites, so, when faced with a project of some magnitude, it made sense for McCain to outsource the task to a specialist company; one with wide experience of planning the logistics...
The cost pressure in the process industry is high. Companies have to run their plants with maximum efficiency. This is not just a question of avoiding expensive downtimes, but also of identifying less obvious cost drivers. In the everyday practice of plant management and maintenance there are many of these less obvious cost drivers, but frequently ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems with maintenance modules do not offer sufficient support in identifying optimization potential. Nor do they provide enough scheduling assistance for maintenance engineers – although it is in the optimization...
A custom-built, infrared system from has helped the Barrier Group to develop a high performance, thermal insulation system for submarine pipelines, which offers significant advantages over conventional systems.
The high power infrared system is used to cure adhesive to ensure that a polypropylene material, which imparts impact resistance, corrosion protection and additional thermal insulation, can be efficiently applied to an innovative insulation shell around a conventional steel pipe. This results in reduced lay tension, together with significant improvements in pipe-laying productivity.

At Welsh Water’s water treatment plant at Cwellyn intelligent electric valve actuators have been installed to control the flow through a new state-of-the-art extension to the works. Welsh Water’s new plant at Cwellyn has been designed and built by Black & Veatch Ltd, one of Welsh Water’s Asset Management Alliance partners for water supply capital investment schemes. The new treatment regime is designed to clarify the water before it enters the existing works in order to deal with changing raw water conditions and consistently meet all water quality standards. IQT direct...
Siemens is ending all reduced working-hour arrangements at its facilities in Germany. “The German government’s provision to extend funding for reduced working hour schemes helped us weather a difficult economic phase,” said Walter Huber, head of Human Resources for Germany. “The show of unity on the part of politicians, trade unions and the company enabled us to keep our employees’ expertise at the company. Now demand is on the rise again, and we’re ideally equipped in terms of personnel,” Huber continued. In June 2009, at the height of the reduced working hour arrangements, some 19,000...
Allweiler has been manufacturing pumps in Germany for 150 years, making it the country's oldest pump manufacturer. To celebrate, they are looking for the three oldest Allweiler pumps still in service anywhere in the world. Submissions will be accepted until the end of December 2010 and the operators will receive a modern replacement pump at no charge.
Since Allweiler's founding in 1860, building long-lived and reliable pumps has been one of the company's most important objectives. Having the right materials, designs, and configurations was just as important back then as it is today. "Just...
Emerson Process Management is one of three suppliers chosen for a long-term frame agreement with Norway’s Statoil that positions Emerson to bid on future automation and safety systems for the international oil and gas producer. The agreement supports Statoil’s strategy of using innovative technologies to solve the energy needs of the future, including making the most of emerging opportunities in shale gas, heavy oil, and deep-water production, as well as further development of the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Emerson’s integrated safety and automation system will help Statoil maximize...
This year, IFAT ENTSORGA show, which takes place at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from 13 to 17 September 2010, is bigger than ever: Over 2,700 exhibitors from 45 countries (2008: 2,605 exhibitors from 41 countries) will be presenting their innovations and technology solutions to the trade visitors on the five days of the fair. 37 percent of the exhibitors are international, i.e. come from outside Germany. This represents a rise of approximately five percent as compared to the previous event. An increase is also seen in the amount of exhibition space taken up by the event – to around 200,000...

PCN Europe talked to Dipl.-Ing.Thomas Kleinbongartz, Director Global Marketing, Division Process Automation of Pepperl+Fuchs, about intrinsic safety and its importance in modern process automation. The Process Automation Division of Pepperl+Fuchs is a market leader in intrinsically safe explosion protection components and protection of hazardous area applications.
What is intrinsic safety?
Intrinsic safety in the potentially explosive areas of process automation refers to the electronic prevention of sparks through the limitation of electricity, voltage and wattage in the electric circuit concerned. This method makes e.g. the application of pressure-proof enclosures for the installed equipment and devices in the explosive areas unnecessary. Intrinsic safety offers a number of advantages for the operation and maintenance of a processing plant, for example the servicing of devices and systems without a hot work permit.
FLUXUS® measures flow non-invasively using ultrasonic technology. Clamp-on ultrasonic transducers are simply clamped onto the outside of the pipe and never come into contact with the liquid. Pipe work is not necessary.
Non-invasive clamp-on technology provides maximum flexibility and the sophisticated electronics of FLUXUS® ensure the highest possible reliability. The measuring system, consisting of the transducer and VARIOFIX transducer system, can be optimally adjusted to suit individual requirements.
The FLUXUS® flowmeter series comprises a broad variety of transmitters and...
SMART "S" Gas Detectors are SIL2 (3) certified gas detectors, ideal to monitoring flammable and toxic compounds wherever the need of a fail safe gas detection system is required. SMART "S" come complete with Infrared sensors, catalytic sensors or electrochemical cells and the sensors behaviour is constantly microprocessor controlled. Amongst this range, SMART S-MS for flammable gas represent the greatest innovation. This detector come complete with a double technology sensor head where Infrared and Pellistor sensor are integrated to allow compare two...
The MK502A T-slot cylinder sensors for ATEX Namur applications complement the ifm range of cylinder sensors for pneumatic cylinders. The wear-free and robust sensor is certified for the ATEX categories 1G/1D (zones 0/20), developed to the EN 60947-5-6 standard and offers IP 65/67 protection.
The sensors offer the following advantages: self-locking mechanism, strain relief, easy single-handed installation, clearly visible LED display for the switching status. With the range of accessories, these sensors can be fixed to common T-slot, tie rod, integrated profile or trapezoidal slot cylinders.
