New motorized actuator for linear valves GEMÜ has developed a new motorized open/close actuator ...

The valves using this actuator are ideally suited to applications without plant air. At the same time, the operating costs of the motorized actuator are lower than those of a comparable pneumatic actuator or even a solenoid valve. In a pneumatic actuator or a solenoid valve with control function normally closed, the valve must be supplied with compressed air or consumes power the entire time that it is open. The new motorized actuator, with a power consumption of approx. 24 W, is designed so that it only requires power to position the valve. When it has reached the closed or open end position, the integrated limit switch switches the actuator off automatically and holds the valve in position until the next control signal. A seal adjuster can be implemented using the adjustable limit switch of the CLOSED position. The electrical connection is made via M12 connectors.
The actuating speed is between 4-10 mm/sec., depending on the nominal size. The GEMÜ S680 diaphragm valve closes in approx. 0.5 sec. in nominal size DN 15, and for DN 25 in approx. 2 sec. The even closing process noticeably reduces water hammer in comparison to fast closing pneumatic and solenoid valves. The compact actuator is no wider than the valve body and is therefore ideally suited for use in space-saving valve batteries.
The diaphragm valve has two distinct advantages over the solenoid valve: firstly solenoid valves in the sizes up to DN 50 are either directly controlled or servo assisted. Directly controlled valves require very large solenoids for the equivalent operating pressure, and therefore consume a lot of power and generate a considerable amount of heat. Solenoid valves are preferably servo assisted to avoid this disadvantage however very small control apertures are therefore necessary which are susceptible to solids and particles in the medium. Blocked control apertures cause the valves to fail. Particle filters to protect the solenoid valves increase procurement and operating costs and must be taken into account from a TCO point of view. By contrast, the design of motorized diaphragm valves makes them insensitive to particles and solids in the medium. Even grains of sand and pieces of limescale in water pipes, for example, impair neither the function nor the tightness of the valves. The second advantage of the diaphragm valve is its design, which creates a hermetic separation between the actuator and the working medium without additional parts or gaskets. Of course, this is also possible in solenoid valves, but it increases their complexity and their cost.
The new motorized actuator is offered in two valve designs. The GEMÜ S680 diaphragm valve is available in PVC-U, reinforced PP and brass in sizes DN 10 and DN 15. Ratings are max. 6 bar, depending on nominal size and maximum permissible operating temperatures are 60°C. The operating time is between 0.5-1 sec., depending on size.
The GEMÜ S580 angle seat globe valve is also available in sizes DN 10 and DN 15. Reinforced PP and brass are available as valve body materials and the ratings as per the S680. The operating time is between 0.8-1 sec., depending on size.

Flow monitor with high switch accuracy for fluids

Flow monitors in the series RVM/UM from Meister Stroemungstechnik are specially designed for applications in which the monitored flow limit value is much smaller than the normal operating flow. Thus, the smallest practicable switch-off point is 0.1 l/min, at a recommended maximum operating flow rate of 120 l/min. The device is specially constructed to attain a wide operating range at high switch accuracy and minimal pressure loss. At flow rates in the range of the desired limit value, the lower part of the measuring piston is closely fit into a cylindrically bored hole, so that the desired switch point can be precisely adjusted. The switch-off point, as well as the switch-on point is located in this range. As volume flow increases, the measuring piston emerges from the cylindrically bored hole and provides a much larger cross-sectional area for the flow medium. Through the installation of a spring, which returns the piston to its initial position, the flow monitor can be operated in any orientation. Electrical control is accomplished by equipping the piston with magnets, which energize a potential free, bistable reed contact housed separately along side the flow monitor body. The reed contact is completely sealed within the housing, whereby, depending on the connection used, (plug socket or cable), a protection class of IP65 or IP 67 may be attained. The compact design, robust construction, high pressure- and temperature resistance, allow these devices to be employed in the most demanding environments. In the standard version, the flow monitor has a maximum operating temperature of 120 °C; the high temperature version is employable to 160 °C. Maximum operating pressure is 250 bar and 300 bar respectively. Switch contacts are available as normally open or change over contacts. The switch points, specified by the customer, are factory set and tested, and can range from 0.1 l/min to 30 l/min. Switch points over 3 l/min have an accuracy of ±5 % of switch value. The accuracy under 3 l/min is ±0,1 l/min. The flow monitor is also available in an EX-version to comply with ATEX standards.

New Flow Monitors with bypass for large volume flow

Meister Stroemungstechnik presents a new series of float equipped flow monitors that is particularly suited for monitoring large volume flows. The series WBM-65 was developed for applications, where electrical limit monitoring of large volume flows is required, but monitoring by means of electronic measurement methods is not possible or too complicated. The WBM-65 devices use the mechanical float principle with all its benefits. They excel through rapid reaction times, reliability and robustness. For electrical monitoring the piston-shaped floats are equipped with magnets controlling a reed contact attached outside the housing. This contact is installed in a moulded switch-gear housing that ensures compliance with protection class IP65 or IP67, depending on the selected connection-type (connector or cable). The reed contact does not require an additional power supply. The integrated return spring allows installation of the device in any position. To minimize pressure loss, the device is equipped with an integrated bypass. Through this mean, the flow monitor has a maximum pressure loss of 0.3 bar for flow within its measuring range. At the same time, the compact design and robustness of the device is preserved. The standard version can be used up to 100°C, whereas the high-temperature version can be operated at up to 180°C. The burst strength depends on the flanges used. For high-pressure applications, a version with threaded connections is available on request. The switch point can be set within a range from 6 to 23m3/h. The value required by the customer is preset and tested on a test stand at the factory. In addition to the version for water and watery media, Meister also offers a version for oils. Besides the standard contacts, explosion-protected switching contacts according to ATEX are available.

Emerson Process Management announces extended line sizes for the Fisher Control-Disk valve. The valve's throttling performance makes it suitable for applications that involve fast processes and varying pressure drops, such as in the hydrocarbon, refining, chemical, pulp and paper, and metals and mining industries. The wide control range is twice that of traditional butterfly valves for better adherence to set point. This improved capability allows control closer to the target set point, regardless of process disturbances, which results in a reduction in process variability. The valve is reliable and has low maintenance requirements, especially when it is paired with a Fisher actuator and Fieldvue digital valve controller, resulting in high plant availability. This assembly can capture and deliver diagnostic data to ValveLink software, providing an accurate picture of valve, actuator, and digital valve controller performance. This makes it a core component of Emerson’s PlantWeb digital plant architecture.Designed as a direct replacement valve, existing piping can be used. Both soft and metal seals are available to address specific application needs. The new Control-Disk valve sizes are designed for installation between ASME Class 150 or Class 300 raised-face flanges with flangeless (wafer) or single flange (lugged) body designs. Face-to-face dimensions are in compliance with API 609 and MSS SP-68 standards. Edited by: Constanze Schmitz

Oxford RF Sensors has developed a hand held battery powered sensor to measure diesel/bio-diesel mixtures that provides real time in-field measurements. The sensor measures the amount of bio-diesel in diesel and will also indicate whether the sample contains FAME or unrefined vegetable oil, contamination of the fuel or if a non-diesel sample is being tested. Common contaminants detected with an out of range error message include white spirit, petrol and water. The robust sensor design is suited for on site test work as an early warning of possible contamination. The test procedure requires no special skills or lab conditions and is therefore suitable for a broad range of applications, from batch checking fuels at terminals, through to monitoring fuel supplies for standby power generation systems. The sensor will take a reading in twenty seconds and is accurate to within +- 1% over the range of bio-diesel concentrations from 0-100%. Independent trials show good agreement with laboratory based FTIR methods (Fourier Transform Infra Red). The hand held fuel analyser stores up to 300 measurements and can download and print measurement data to a computer via a USB connector. This connection can also be used to upload new software and fluid parameters as and when new bio-fuels are introduced.

The treated water has conductivity of typically less than 0.2mS/cm, organics less than 500ppb and total bacteria count less than 100cfu/ml, which meets the requirements for pharmaceutical Purified Water and ASTM Type E4 for microelectronics. In a small footprint the device contains a fully integrated water treatment train of duplex softeners, carbon block or granular carbon cartridge pre filter, a tank and pump, low pressure reverse osmosis modules and 10 or 18 cell pair CEDI stacks. The sanitisation sequence is fully automatic and the cleaning in place procedure is easily carried out by following the prompts on the touch panel display. Both procedures utilise the integral tank for chemical mixing and recirculation. The complete assembly is mounted on a wheeled base for ease of access during maintenance. There are five models in the range covering flow rates from 500-1000l/h. All the water treatment systems are factory tested and provided with a full validation pack covering installation qualification (IQ) and operational qualification (OQ). The microprocessor controller which features an intuitive HMI - set points are user configurable, protected by I-button security. The controller can be provided with Ethernet or RS232 communications protocols as an optional extra. Edited by: Constanze Schmitz

Level switches for viscous or dry substances and liquids

With the level switch LBFS, Baumer offers an alternative to widely-used vibration level switches. The device is able to detect the level of viscous or dry substances as well as liquids and can be mounted in any position in tanks or pipelines. The sensor is unaffected by flow, turbulence, bubbles, foam, and suspended solids. As the sensor head is smooth and very small, even adhesive media do not stick to it. The sensor’s short response time of just 0.2 seconds enables fast filling processes as well as an accurate and reliable keeping of levels.
The level switch detects high and low levels in tanks and pipelines. Furthermore, it can be used for overfill protection, dry running protection of pumps and phase separation in oil-water mixtures. There are many fields of applications: drinking water, wastewater, filtration, HVAC, hydraulics, oil and gas, bio energy, wood pellets, flour mills, railway transportation or pump systems.
The sensor is mounted in a compact, robust, and corrosion-resistant stainless steel housing. It can be installed and sealed easily with a Teflon tape. It can be configured on PC via the FlexProgrammer 9701. The device can be used at a wide operation temperature range from -40 up to 115°C.
The LBFS is based on the frequency sweep technology whereby a frequency is swept by the transmitter and becomes subject to a phase shift depending on the medium. When in contact with the medium, which has a different dielectric constant (DC) outside the selected DC range, an electronic switch is triggered. The high sensitivity over a large sensing range from DC 1.5 up to more than 100 allows the level detection of all kinds of powders, granulates and liquids. Even difficult substances like polyamide granulate or paper can be detected reliably. Compared to other measuring methods like vibrating forks, conductive ultrasonic or optical sensors, this technology has further important advantages. It has no vibrating parts and is not sensitive to changes based on conductivity, temperature or pressure. Furthermore, the sensor is suitable for all kinds of applications for which a range of different technology devices would have been required.
