Phoenix Contact has introduced its modular VIP I/O marshalling system, a modular solution designed to simplify signal handling in process automation environments using universal I/O architectures. The system combines signal conditioning and signal marshalling in a compact platform, reducing the need for dedicated marshalling cabinets while supporting a consistent universal I/O approach from the field level to the controller.

Reduced implementation time

Unlike conventional point-to-point signal conditioning, where field signals are sorted by type and connected to dedicated I/O hardware, universal I/O allows individual channels to be configured through software. The VIP I/O-Marshalling system addresses the remaining complexity at the marshalling and interface levels by integrating both functions into a single configurable platform. According to Phoenix Contact, this approach allows project steps such as planning, installation and testing to be carried out independently of signal type, reducing implementation times for complex projects by up to 30%.

SIL and Ex-I versions available

The tool-free plug-and-play system consists of universal termination boards and pluggable function modules, including signal conditioners, measuring transducers, relays, safety relays, fuse modules and surge protection devices. SIL and Ex i versions are available for applications requiring functional safety and explosion protection.

Field wiring and power supplies are connected using Push-in Technology, while communication with the controller is established through a standard D-SUB system cable. The platform supports universal I/O controllers from Schneider Electric, Honeywell and Siemens, and can also connect to additional controllers via its standard D-SUB interface. Signal types can be modified by replacing individual plug-in modules without rewiring, helping reduce engineering effort and supporting system availability.
